The two cyclic Euler angles give conserved canonical momenta
L3=pψ=I3(ψ˙+ϕ˙cosθ),Lz=pϕ=I1ϕ˙sin2θ+L3cosθ.
(1)
Here L3 is the body-axis angular momentum and Lz the vertical angular momentum. Thus ω3=L3/I3 is constant. Since the Lagrangian has no explicit time dependence, the energy is also conserved:
E=2I1θ˙2+2I1ϕ˙2sin2θ+2I3L32+Mglcosθ.
(2)
These are the three independent conserved quantities furnished by the continuous symmetries of the heavy symmetric top.
