b
For the Fourier mode ei(iθ+jϕ), the Forward Euler method has amplification factor
H(θ,ϕ)=1−4μ[sin2(θ/2)+csin2(ϕ/2)].
(1)
It is real and ranges from 1−4μ(1+c) to 1. The two-dimensional Fourier stability analysis therefore requires its minimum to be at least −1. Thus the exact stable range is
0<μ≤2(1+c)1.
(2)
The endpoint is included; the highest-frequency mode then has amplification −1 and bounded norm.
