In principal axes, 2E=∑Iiωi2 and L2=∑Ii2ωi2. Substitute the Euler equations for a torque-free rigid body:
E˙=ω1ω2ω3[(I2−I3)+(I3−I1)+(I1−I2)]=0.
(1)
For the squared angular momentum,
21dtdL2=ω1ω2ω3[I1(I2−I3)+I2(I3−I1)+I3(I1−I2)]=0.
(2)
Thus both E and L2 are conserved, even though the body-frame components of L generally change.
