For a smooth projective curve C of geometric genus g and a divisor on an algebraic curve D, write ℓ(D)=h0(C,OC(D)) and let KC be a canonical divisor. The curve form of the Riemann-Roch theorem is
ℓ(D)−ℓ(KC−D)=degD+1−g.
(1)
Here degKC=2g−2 and ℓ(KC)=g. In line bundle form,
h0(C,L)−h0(C,ωC⊗L−1)=degL+1−g.
(2)
The usual curve convention is a smooth geometrically integral projective curve; geometric embedding tests may be checked after extending the ground field to an algebraic closure.
