For y=x−Sx∈Y, the telescoping arithmetic means satisfy
N1∑n=1Nyn=Nx1−xN+1⟶0,
(1)
because x is a bounded sequence. Hence ∥1−y∥∞≥∣1−N−1∑n=1Nyn∣ for every N, and passage to the limit gives ∥1−y∥∞≥1. Taking y=0 shows d(1,Y)=1. The proved Hahn-Banach distance formula therefore yields a bounded linear functional L on the real l-infinity sequence space with
∥L∥=1,L(1)=1,L∣Y=0.
(2)
We verify that this single linear functional also has the two remaining properties.
