Let J be an ideal of R′=S−1R and contract it to
I={r∈R:r/1∈J}.
(1)
This is an ideal of R, so I=(d) because R is a principal ideal domain. Every xn/1 is a unit in a ring R′. Consequently, if r/xn∈J, then r/1=(xn/1)(r/xn)∈J, so r∈(d) and r/xn∈(d/1). Conversely d/1∈J, hence every multiple of it belongs to J. Thus
J=(d/1),
(2)
so every ideal of R′ is principal. The localization remains an integral domain; hence R′ is a principal ideal domain.
