b
Multiply the birth-death master equation by n and sum. Index shifts give
μ˙=(B−D)μ.
(1)
For the second moment, a birth changes n2 by 2n+1 and a death changes it by −2n+1, so
dtdE[N2]=2(B−D)E[N2]+(B+D)μ.
(2)
Since σ2=E[N2]−μ2,
 (σ2)′=2(B−D)σ2+(B+D)μ .
(3)
Together these are the moment equations of a linear birth-death process.
