The induced map on the spectrum of a commutative ring is contraction of an ideal:
f(q)=φ−1(q).
(1)
To see that it is well defined, let q be a prime ideal of S. Its inverse image is an ideal of R, and it is proper because φ(1)=1∈/q. If ab∈φ−1(q), then φ(a)φ(b)∈q, whence φ(a)∈q or φ(b)∈q. This proves that the inverse image is a prime ideal.
For any ideal I⊆R, its extension of an ideal to S is IS=φ(I)S. We have
f−1(VR(I))={q:I⊆φ−1(q)}=VS(IS).
(2)
Thus inverse images of Zariski-closed sets are Zariski-closed sets, which proves that f is a continuous map.
