The constructible hierarchy is defined by transfinite recursion using the definable power set. With parameters permitted in the internal definitions, write Def(A,1) for the definable subsets of A. Then
L0=∅,Lα+1=Def(Lα,1),Lλ=α<λ⋃Lα(λ a nonzero limit ordinal).
(1)
Its class union is the constructible universe L=⋃α∈OrdLα. Only subsets definable over (Lα,∈) using a first-order formula and finitely many parameters from Lα enter at a successor stage.
