Using the Levi-Civita symbol and the epsilon-delta identity,
[a×(b×c)]i=εijkajεklmblcm=(δilδjm−δimδjl)ajblcm=bi(a⋅c)−ci(a⋅b).
(1)
This proves the vector triple product identity
a×(b×c)=(a⋅c)b−(a⋅b)c.
(2)
Applying it inside the scalar triple product gives Lagrange's identity
(a×b)⋅(c×d)=(a⋅c)(b⋅d)−(a⋅d)(b⋅c).
