Let Kn be the abstract simplex on the vertex set
{v0,v1,…,vn};
(1)
thus every subset of these vertices is a simplex. Let Ln−1 be its boundary subcomplex of a simplex, consisting of all proper faces, so the only simplex of Kn absent from Ln−1 is the full n-simplex [v0⋯vn].
The geometric realization of a simplicial complex ∣Kn∣ is the usual solid geometric n-simplex, which is homeomorphic to the closed disk Dn. Under such a homeomorphism its topological boundary is ∣Ln−1∣, and
∣Ln−1∣≅Sn−1.
