The existence and uniqueness of splitting fields says that any two splitting fields of a polynomial are isomorphic by an isomorphism fixing pointwise. Inside a chosen algebraic closure, the subfield generated by all roots is unique.
For a polynomial with distinct roots, let be its splitting field. Its Galois group of a polynomial is
the group of field automorphisms of fixing . It acts faithfully on the roots.
If is irreducible and are roots, the embedding taking to extends, because is normal and separable, to an element of the Galois group. Thus the action is transitive. Conversely, the roots belonging to one orbit have a product polynomial invariant under the whole Galois group, hence lying in . If there were more than one orbit, these orbit polynomials would give a nontrivial factorization of . Therefore
Now let and let be one root. The two roots of are and . On choosing , the roots of are
Consequently its splitting field is
Put
The four roots are . If , then
because is irreducible. Hence the Galois group has order four and acts transitively, hence regularly, on the roots.
Let be the automorphism taking to . Since ,
If , then is an involution. Together with the distinct involution taking to , it gives
In the ordered root set these generators act as double transpositions.
If , then
so has order four and
This is the degree-four case in the Galois group of an irreducible even quartic.
If , then
Let
This is the nonidentity automorphism of . By extending an embedding that sends to , and composing with if necessary, choose
Then
The eight elements
are distinct, and exhaust the Galois group. Thus the dihedral Galois action on four radical roots gives
Now suppose is a square in . Then , so every automorphism fixes . We are in case (i) with , and therefore
Conversely, suppose the group is the Klein four-group. Label the roots
The three nonidentity elements in its transitive action are the three double transpositions. Each fixes : they send the ordered pair respectively to
whose products all equal . Hence every element of the Galois group fixes . By the Artin fixed-field theorem,
Therefore is a square in . This proves the Klein-four criterion for an irreducible even quartic:
