Let Δ=ρ−σ=Δ+−Δ− be its positive-negative decomposition. Since TrΔ=0, the positive and negative parts have equal trace, namely D(ρ,σ). For every positive contraction M,
Tr(MΔ)=Tr(MΔ+)−Tr(MΔ−)≤TrΔ+=D(ρ,σ).
(1)
Here both products have nonnegative trace, and M≤I bounds the first term. Equality is attained by the orthogonal projection P+ onto the positive spectral subspace of Δ, since P+Δ+=Δ+ and P+Δ−=0. Thus the variational characterization of trace distance is
D(ρ,σ)=0≤M≤ImaxTr[M(ρ−σ)].
