Because X has full column rank, XTX is invertible. The ordinary least squares estimator is
β=(XTX)−1XTY.
(1)
It satisfies the normal equations
XT(Y−Xβ)=0,
(2)
so the residual is orthogonal to the column space of X. For any β,
Y−Xβ=(Y−Xβ)+X(β−β).
(3)
The two terms are orthogonal, and the Pythagorean theorem in an inner-product space gives
S(β)=S(β)+(β−β)TXTX(β−β)≥S(β).
(4)
Thus β minimizes the least-squares objective.
