Take the ring torus with minor radius 1 and major radius Rn=n+2. With angular coordinate θ around the generating circle, its Gaussian curvature is
Kn(θ)=Rn+cosθcosθ,
(1)
and hence
infSnKn=−Rn−11⟶0.
(2)
Thus the displayed limsup condition holds, while every Sn has genus one and is not diffeomorphic to the sphere.
