Using the convention of the question, the characteristic polynomial and characteristic equation are
χA(z)=det(A−zI),χA(z)=0.
(1)
For
A=(acbd),
(2)
one has
χA(z)=z2−(a+d)z+(ad−bc).
(3)
Direct multiplication gives
A2−(a+d)A+(ad−bc)I=0,
(4)
entry by entry. Thus χA(A)=0, verifying the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for 2×2 matrices.
