For 0≤t≤1 and x,y∈Rd, convexity gives
fi(tx+(1−t)y)≤tfi(x)+(1−t)fi(y).
(1)
Taking the maximum over i and then bounding each term by the corresponding endpoint maxima yields
maxifi(tx+(1−t)y)≤tmaxifi(x)+(1−t)maxifi(y).
(2)
Thus the finite pointwise maximum of convex functions is convex. Summing the original inequalities over i proves that ∑ifi is convex as well.
