Let ℓj be the Lagrange interpolation polynomial for the roots ωj, and define
Aj=∫−11ℓj(x)r(x)dx.
(1)
For degQ≤2n−1, polynomial division gives Q=SPn+R with degS,degR<n. Orthogonality kills the first term, while interpolation gives R=∑jR(ωj)ℓj. Therefore
∫Qr=∑jAjQ(ωj).
(2)
Taking Q=ℓj proves uniqueness. Taking Q=ℓj2 also shows
Aj=∫ℓj2r>0,∑jAj=∫r.
(3)
This is Gaussian quadrature.
