b
At the first-order phase transition, the central minimum m=0 and two nonzero minima m=±m0 are degenerate, with barriers between them. Writing x=m02>0, stationarity and equal free energies give
a2+2a4x+3a6x2=0,a2+a4x+a6x2=0.
(1)
Their difference gives a4x+2a6x2=0, so
m02=−2a6a4,a2=4a6a42.
(2)
The magnitude of the magnetization therefore jumps from zero to
∣m0∣=−2a6a4.
(3)
The two possible signs are related by the model's spin-reversal symmetry.
