A four-vector is an object whose components transform between inertial frames by a Lorentz transformation,
U′μ=ΛμνUν.
(1)
Lorentz transformations are defined by
ΛTηΛ=η,
(2)
where η is the Minkowski metric. Consequently
U′⋅U′=(ΛU)Tη(ΛU)=UTΛTηΛU=UTηU=U⋅U.
(3)
Thus the Minkowski norm of a four-vector is the same in every inertial frame.
