The first isomorphism theorem for rings states that a ring homomorphism ϕ:R→S induces an isomorphism
R/kerϕ≅imϕ.
(1)
Because J is an ideal, sums and products of elements of R+J remain in R+J, so it is a subring. The surjective homomorphism
R⟶(R+J)/J,r⟼r+J
(2)
has kernel R∩J. The theorem gives
R/(R∩J)≅(R+J)/J.
(3)
Evaluation at −2 gives
Q[X]/(X+2)≅Q,
(4)
so this quotient is a field of characteristic zero. The other quotient is
Z[X]/(3,X2+X+1)≅F3[X]/((X−1)2).
(5)
It has characteristic 3 but is not a field, since the nonzero class of X−1 is nilpotent.
