Let (Tm) be a Cauchy sequence in the operator norm. For each v∈V,
∥Tmv−Tnv∥≤∥Tm−Tn∥∥v∥,
(1)
so (Tmv) is a Cauchy sequence. Completeness of the Banach space V permits the definition
Tv=limmTmv. Pointwise passage to the limit proves that T is a linear. A norm-Cauchy sequence is a bounded sequence, say ∥Tm∥≤C, and therefore
∥Tv∥≤C∥v∥, so T is bounded. Finally, letting m→∞ in
∥(Tn−Tm)v∥≤ε∥v∥ gives
∥Tn−T∥≤ε. Thus Tn→T in operator norm and
B(V,V) is Banach.
