The zero-temperature internal energy is
E=∫0EFεg(ε)dε=4π2ℏ3c3VEF4=43NEF.
(1)
Using part (i),
p=4VNEF=4DN4/3V−4/3.
(2)
Consequently the adiabatic equation of state is
pVa=K,a=34,K=4ℏc(3π2)1/3N4/3.
(3)
The pressure is degeneracy pressure: it remains nonzero at zero temperature because of the Pauli exclusion principle. By comparison, a classical ultrarelativistic ideal gas at fixed temperature obeys pV=NkBT, so its corresponding volume exponent is one and its pressure vanishes as T→0.
