Since CXϕk=λkϕk and the eigenfunctions can be chosen orthonormally, independence of the sample gives
Cov(⟨μ,ϕk⟩,⟨μ,ϕk′⟩)=n1⟨CXϕk,ϕk′⟩=nλk1{k=k′}.
(1)
This remains valid for repeated eigenvalues after choosing an orthonormal eigenbasis within each eigenspace.
