Project the steady Euler equations for an inviscid fluid along a streamline. With no gravity,
udu+ρdp=0.
(1)
For an isentropic fluid, dp=cs2dρ, so
dudρ=−cs2ρu.
(2)
The scalar mass flux is j=ρu, and hence
dudj=ρ(1−cs2u2).
(3)
It increases with speed in subsonic flow and decreases with speed in supersonic flow.
