4C
For a regular constraint g=0, an interior constrained extremum satisfies
∇f=λ∇g,
(1)
together with the constraint; boundary cases must also be checked.
Here maximize f=xyz subject to x2+y2+z2=L2. The Lagrange multiplier equations give
yz=2λx,xz=2λy,xy=2λz.
(2)
At a positive maximizer these imply x=y=z=L/3. Boundary points have zero volume, so the maximum is
33L3.
