A possibly randomized test is a function φ(X)∈[0,1], interpreted as the conditional probability of rejecting H0. Its power function is
πφ(θ)=Eθ[φ(X)].
(1)
It has size at most α when
supθ∈Θ0πφ(θ)≤α.
(2)
Such a test is a uniformly most powerful test of size α if, for every other test ψ of size at most α,
πφ(θ)≥πψ(θ)for every θ∈Θ1.
(3)
Thus one test maximizes power simultaneously at every parameter value in the alternative.
