An element x∈L is separable over K when its minimal polynomial mx(T)∈K[T] has distinct roots in a splitting field.
Because mx is irreducible, it is separable exactly when
gcd(mx,mx′)=1.
(1)
If mx′=0, then degmx′<degmx, so irreducibility makes this greatest common divisor equal to one. If mx′=0, the zero-derivative criterion gives
mx(T)=g(Tp)
(2)
for some g∈K[T], and mx is inseparable. Therefore
x is separable over K⟺mx(T)=g(Tp) for every g∈K[T].
