For a nonzero real vector x, the Rayleigh quotient of the matrix A is
RA(x)=xTxxTAx.
(1)
The Rayleigh quotient iteration starts from a unit vector v0. Given vk, compute the shift
μk=RA(vk),
(2)
solve the linear system
(A−μkI)wk=vk,
(3)
and normalize in the Euclidean norm:
vk+1=∥wk∥2wk.
(4)
The next eigenvalue estimate is μk+1=RA(vk+1). The process stops when the eigenpair residual is sufficiently small.
