Write the Rayleigh equation for inviscid shear flow as
ϕ′′−α2ϕ−U−cU′′ϕ=0,ϕ(0)=ϕ(1)=0.
(1)
Multiply by ϕ∗, integrate, and use integration by parts:
∫01(∣ϕ′∣2+α2∣ϕ∣2)dz+∫01∣U−c∣2U′′(U−c∗)∣ϕ∣2dz=0.
(2)
Its imaginary part is
ci∫01∣U−c∣2U′′∣ϕ∣2dz=0.
(3)
For an unstable mode ci>0, the integral can vanish only if U′′ changes sign somewhere in the flow. Thus the velocity profile must have an inflection point. This is Rayleigh's inflection-point theorem; it is necessary, not sufficient, for inviscid instability.
