The primitive root ζn is a zero of the cyclotomic polynomial Φn, of degree φ(n). Its minimal polynomial over K divides Φn, so
[K(ζn):K]∣φ(n),
(1)
where divisibility also follows from the embedding of the Galois group of the cyclotomic field into (Z/nZ)×. Over Q, Gauss's irreducibility theorem for cyclotomic polynomials says that Φn is irreducible. Therefore
[Q(ζn):Q]=degΦn=φ(n).
