A categorical limit of D:J→C is a terminal cone (L,(pj)): every cone (X,(xj)) has a unique map X→L commuting with all legs.
Assume all small products and equalizers exist. Put
P=∏j∈JD(j),Q=∏u:i→jD(j).
(1)
Define s,t:P⇉Q so that the u:i→j components are
su=D(u)πi,tu=πj.
(2)
A map X→P equalizes s,t exactly when its components form a cone over D. Therefore eq(s,t) represents cones and is the limit. This is the construction of small limits from products and equalizers.
