If β∈OL, all of its K-conjugates are algebraic integers, so their sum and product give
TrL/K(β), NL/K(β)∈OK.
(1)
Conversely, if these two quantities lie in OK, then β is a root of
X2−TrL/K(β)X+NL/K(β),
(2)
a monic polynomial whose coefficients are algebraic integers. Part (a), or transitivity of integral dependence, implies β∈OL.
