The discriminant is
112−4⋅31=−3.
(1)
The discriminant criterion for a quadratic congruence modulo an odd prime therefore says that, for p=3, a solution exists exactly when
(p−3)=1.
(2)
The quadratic character of minus three gives
(p−3)=(3p),
(3)
which equals 1 precisely for p≡1(mod3). When p=3, the polynomial is
X2+2X+1=(X+1)2,
(4)
so it also has a solution. Hence
p≡0 or 1(mod3).
