Use unitary gauge and write ϕ=v+h/2. The quadratic Lagrangian contains
21(∂h)2−λv2h2+e2v2AμAμ.
(1)
Thus the radial Higgs excitation is a spin-zero particle with mh2=2λv2, while the gauge boson is a massive spin-one particle with mA2=2e2v2. The phase of ϕ is the Goldstone boson eaten by the Higgs mechanism to supply the longitudinal polarization of Aμ.
