Varying Aν gives the Maxwell equations
∂μFμν=Jν,Jν=ie[(Dνϕ)†ϕ−ϕ†Dνϕ].
(1)
On the vacuum manifold, choose unitary gauge so that ϕ=v. Then J=−2e2v2A and the London equation is
∇×J=−2e2v2B.
(2)
For a static configuration, ∇×B=J and ∇⋅B=0, so
∇2B=2e2v2B=ξ21B,ξ=2ev1=mA1.
(3)
The magnetic field therefore decays exponentially inside the condensate. This is the Meissner effect, with penetration depth equal to the inverse gauge-boson mass.
