b
Let em denote the mth elementary symmetric polynomial of ti+1,…,ti+k−1. Expanding both sides of the Marsden identity in powers of x and equating the coefficient of xk−1−m gives
am,i=(mk−1)em(ti+1,…,ti+k−1),0≤m≤k−1.
(1)
Thus a0,i=1, while a1,i and a2,i are respectively the means of the interior knots and of their pairwise products.
