17C
Odd terms vanish and direct evaluation gives L(p)=(8/45)c4, so the rule is exact through degree 3. With n=3, the Peano kernel is
K(t)=61L[(x−t)+3]=61[4(1−t)4−(−s−t)+3−(s−t)+3].
(1)
Its nonnegativity and ∫K=L(x4)/4!=1/135 give ∣L(f)∣≤∥f(4)∥∞/135, so N=135. Equality holds for a quartic with fourth derivative of constant sign.
