Apply the normal-shock relations to M1n=M1sinθ1. Tangential velocity continuity and mass conservation give
tanθ2=tanθ1(γ+1)M12sin2θ12+(γ−1)M12sin2θ1.
(1)
As M1→∞, maximize θ1−θ2; with k=(γ−1)/(γ+1) the optimum has tan2θ1=1/k, and the maximum deflection is arcsin(1/γ).
