The image of a linear map im(ST)=S(imT) lies inside imS. Therefore r(ST)≤r(S). Also S restricted to imT cannot have rank of a linear map greater than its domain's dimension, so r(ST)≤dimimT=r(T). Thus
r(ST)≤min{r(S),r(T)}.
(1)
Equivalently, apply the rank-nullity theorem to that restriction: r(ST)=r(T)−dim(imT∩kerS)≤r(T). This proof keeps track of the intermediate vector subspace, rather than assuming an invertible factor.
