For the linear map T:V→W, its image of a linear map and kernel of a linear map are
imT={T(v):v∈V},kerT={v∈V:T(v)=0}.
(1)
Both contain the zero vector, since T(0)=0. If y1=T(v1) and y2=T(v2) belong to the image of a linear map, then for any real numbers a,b,
ay1+by2=T(av1+bv2)∈imT.
(2)
Thus imT is a vector subspace of W. If u1,u2∈kerT, then
T(au1+bu2)=aT(u1)+bT(u2)=0,
(3)
so kerT is a vector subspace of V.
