If A is a strictly upper triangular matrix, then Aij=0 unless j−i≥1. We prove by mathematical induction that
(Ak)ij=0whenever j−i<k.
(1)
The assertion for k=1 is the definition. In the matrix multiplication formula
(Ak+1)ij=∑ℓ=1n(Ak)iℓAℓj,
(2)
a nonzero summand would require ℓ−i≥k and j−ℓ≥1, hence j−i≥k+1. This proves the induction step. Since j−i≤n−1 for all entries, An=0. In particular, every strictly upper triangular matrix is a nilpotent matrix.
