The first equation is a prescribed first-order removal law. For a constant absorption coefficient,
NThdNTh=−σaThϕ(t)dt.
(1)
Integrating from the initial condition gives
lnNTh0NTh(t)=−σaTh∫0tϕ(t′)dt′,
(2)
and hence
NTh(t)=NTh0e−σaThΦ(t).
(3)
The neutron fluence Φ is the time integral of scalar neutron flux; it has inverse-area units, making σΦ dimensionless. Constant flux is not needed for this integration, but a constant effective coefficient is.
