For a complex scalar field with canonical kinetic term ∣∂ϕ∣2 and potential V=F(∣ϕ∣2), take a broken-symmetry minimum ϕ=v>0, where F′(v2)=0. Writing ϕ=v+(h+iπ)/2 gives quadratic potential F(v2)+v2F′′(v2)h2. Hence the canonical squared masses are mh2=2v2F′′(v2) and mπ2=0. Coupling Dμ=∂μ+ieAμ gives gauge-boson squared mass mA2=2e2v2; the factor of two depends on defining v as the complex field's vacuum value rather than its canonically normalized real component.
