For a finite morphism f:X→Y of smooth curves, the ramification divisor is
Rf=∑P∈X(eP−1)P.
(1)
The Riemann-Hurwitz formula states 2gX−2=(degf)(2gY−2)+degRf.
The coefficients assemble the ramification indices of a morphism of curves.
