In a Parker dynamo wave model, an alpha effect of the form α=ϵ−1α0sin(ωt/ϵ) has zero time average but can generate a finite averaged coupling. The method of multiple scales gives A=−(α0/ω)cos(ωτ)B and B=−(Ωα0/ω2)sin(ωτ)∂xB, where τ=t/ϵ. Consequently C=Ωα02/(2ω2). With diffusion operator ∂x2−ℓ2, the averaged Fourier mode growth exponents are −k2−ℓ2±∣k∣ΩC. For freely adjustable real k, growth requires ΩC>4ℓ2. The result is an asymptotic averaged model for fixed nonzero ω, not an exact replacement at finite ϵ.
