Writing ϕ=ϕ0+2πmτ/β+η with endpoint-fixed η separates winding action and Gaussian fluctuations. The latter give the free return kernel on the lifted line, Z0=I/(2πℏ2β). The starting-angle integral supplies 2π. Zero winding is not the same as the zero-momentum ground-state sector.
