S. McQueen-Mason is the first author of the 1992 study that isolated wall-extension-promoting proteins associated with expansin activity. The original paper gives the byline Simon McQueen-Mason. Working with colleagues, S. McQueen-Mason extracted material from growing seedling cell walls and tested whether it could induce extension in isolated walls.[ref]
Separating the extract into active fractions linked the effect to two proteins, each able to promote extension without detectable hydrolytic wall breakdown. Reconstitution made the scientific question sharper: a substance associated with growth was tested for its ability to restore a physical wall response.[ref]
The distinction between extension and hydrolysis is useful beyond this experiment. A wall can change its mechanical behaviour without wholesale digestion of its constituent polysaccharides.
