For a sequence indexed by the integers, its semidiscrete Fourier transform is the displayed Fourier series in θ∈[−π,π]. For square-summable data the series is interpreted in the L2 norm. Its inversion and Parseval identity are
Wj=2π1∫−ππW(θ)eijθdθ,h∑j∈Z∣Wj∣2=2πh∫−ππ∣W(θ)∣2dθ.

The physical-frequency convention uses θ=kh and W(k)=hW(kh) on [−π/h,π/h]. This is distinct from the discrete Fourier transform of a finite vector. Translation-invariant finite difference operators become Fourier multipliers, making Fourier stability analysis possible.
