For zero shift vector, negative-expansion extrinsic curvature K=−3H and Sij=Kij, retain the leading spatial-gradient equations of a minimally coupled scalar. They give ϕ˙=NΠ, Π˙=−N(3HΠ+V,ϕ), H˙=−4πGNΠ2−NSijSji/2, and S˙ij=−3NHSij. The first-gradient momentum constraint is ∂iH=−4πGΠ∂iϕ−∇jSji/2. Shear decays as a−3 during expansion. Its neglect after inflationary damping yields the equations underlying conservation of the nonlinear curvature covector.
